ACTION ALERT
Tension Heightens Between CAIR and Columbus, Ohio Police Department as Deadline for Hijab Discrimination Suit Approaches
Send an email urging Ohio Gov. Kasich to uphold the dress code of the CPD
Dear Salah,
The deadline for the Ohio Civil Rights Commission to complete their investigation into a discrimination complaint filed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is just days away. Nearly a year ago, on August 20, 2015, the complaint was filed on behalf of a woman wanting to wear a hijab while on duty as a Columbus, Ohio police officer. State law requires the investigation to be concluded within one year from the date of filing, therefore, on August 19, Ohio could potentially become the first state to sanction hijabs for police officers.
This is ridiculous and we need to speak up.
The Columbus Police Department “values neutral dress code” for law enforcement officers, and ACT for America encourages Ohio Governor Kasich and the Civil Rights Commission to continue to uphold this common sense standard. The department has been hard-pressed by CAIR, as they have denounced the department for not opening its policy to allow hijabs and Muslim attire. It is up to us to be a counter voice to this argument.
We urge you to send an email now to encourage the Ohio Governor and Civil Rights Commission to uphold the dress code of the Columbus Police Department.
According to Pew research, only 43 percent of America Muslim women actually wear hijabs. Further, the Koran does not provide a specific dress code, nor is it a religious requirement to wear a hijab, as long as the woman maintains a modest dress. The hijab is a choice, and solely influenced by culture and custom. The Columbus Police Department should not have to alter their entire policy just to comply with a fraction of a percent of the population.
Police officers are sworn to protect and serve their communities. The only way to truly ensure that the public feels safe and secure under the jurisdiction of law enforcement officers is by retaining a neutral, across-the-board uniform standard. A citizen may feel uneasy if approached by an outlier that, in their eyes, may or may not be there to help. Therefore, it is a necessity that officers maintain an unmistakably distinct and recognizable appearance at all times.
It is crucial you speak out about this issue by sending an e-mail to Ohio Governor Kasich and the Civil Rights Commission, using the link provided.
Let them know your strong objection to catering to Political Correctness, especially when it concerns the public’s safety as provided by their police force.
Thank you for taking important actions like this and for your continued support. I assure you, it is making a difference.
Send an email now to Governor Kasich urging him to uphold the dress code of the Columbus Police Department.
Always devoted,
Brigitte Gabriel
