Message from the President
28-5-2025
The time is short. My term as PEN Canada President comes to an end at the AGM on June 12, when you, our members, will vote in a new president. I am very excited about the prospect of talented new leadership, and confident in passing the torch that PEN is ready and able to meet the moment we find ourselves in.
We are coming—remarkably—to the centenary of the founding in 1926 of what was then known as The Canadian Centre of PEN International. Now, more than ever, PEN Canada and its members need to be an insistent voice for freedom of expression in the face of rising authoritarianism in democracies around the world.
I feel grateful to have had the chance to lead this storied organization for four years, to have celebrated literature, to have made a difference, with you, in the lives of international writers in peril, writers in exile here in Canada, and our own emerging Canadian writers. Yet I know, with grief, that in more than one war zone, writers continue to lose their lives. Our job is never done; we may not succeed, but neither will we desist. This is our organization, and together, we mean to pursue our mission.
Thank you all for your support throughout my term, and for all the good wishes and encouragement you have sent me. It has meant a great deal.
With gratitude,
Grace Westcott, PEN Canada President

This edition will feature Yamin Myatt Aye, a writer forced to flee to London, Ontario during Myanmar's 2021 military coup, Diary Marif, a journalist from Iraq currently living in Vancouver, and Jamal Saeed, a poet and writer living in Kingston who spent 12 years imprisoned in Syria.
